Energy conservation has long been an issue in the US. Innovative designs and products are continuously being introduced to the marketplace. Hjärta has made a commitment to using energy efficient materials and systems.
- Insulated envelope will include a weather and air resistive
barrier system to minimize heat loss.
- High performance window.
- Energy Star appliances.
- Central gas boiler in lieu of individual water heaters.
- Energy-efficient elevators.
Water – it’s our most precious resource, essential for the survival of everything on the planet. With increasing population, dramatic climate change and other threats to supplies locally and globally, it is vitally important that we use water wisely. At Hjärta we’ve included a variety of water-saving features to help everyone do their part.
Indoor:
- Low-flow kitchen and bathroom fixtures
- Water conserving toilets
- Recirculating domestic hot water loop.
Outdoor:
- Drought tolerant landscaping
- Low demand native plantings
- High efficiency drip irrigation.
What’s in the air you breathe? As anyone who has ever had a run in with a “sick” building can attest, what you don’t know can indeed hurt you. Indoor air quality is vastly improved by using materials that are low- or non-toxic, and have minimal chemical emissions. Materials that are moisture resistant will inhibit the growth of mold and other biological contaminants. Maintaining the finish of the building with non-toxic cleaning methods and systems will enhance the air quality in the building.
- Low VOC carpets, paints, sealants and adhesives
- Formaldehyde-free trim, doors, and cabinets
- Walk-off mats
- Operable windows and ventilation systems
Sustainable design incorporates a variety of strategies during building design, construction and operation. Materials used in the building of Hjärta reflect our deep commitment to sustainability.
- Reduced maintenance/replacement costs over the life of the building
- Energy efficiency/conservation savings
- Improved resident health
- Conservation of natural resources through the use of renewable product resources
- Reduction of environmental impacts by using local sourcing, environmentally sound on-site disposal, reuse and recycling
- The use of local products helps stimulate the area’s economy

- By Installing water conserving appliances, a family of 2 can save approximately 20,000 gallons of water a year.
Building Materials:
- Buildings consume 40% (3 billion tons annually) of raw materials used globally.
- Buildings consume 25% of the worlds timber harvest.
- By using steel and concrete construction, Hjärta saved approx. 1,609 trees.
- Cork remains the only tree whose bark can regenerate itself after harvest, leaving the tree unharmed.

- Levels of air pollution inside the home can be 2 to 5 times higher then outdoor levels.
Land Use:
- Hjärta's urban location and multi-story construction helped to prevent the use of approx. 12 acres of farmland.
- We are losing 100 billion tonnes of topsoil every year. This is five times faster than nature can create it.
Energy:
- Buildings are responsible for 35% of the worlds CO2 gas emissions.
- 2.5 billion people globally have no electricity. The U.S uses 25% of the world’s energy.
- For every kilowatt-hour of electricitiy we save, we reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (the greenhouse gas) that enters the atmosphere.
- The average building consumes 1.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity a year. Hjärta consumes 25% less, saving roughly 375,000 KWH annually.
Waste:
- Buildings create 136 million tons of construction and demolition waste in the U.S (approximately 2.8lbs per person, daily)
- At least 95% of Hjärta’s construction waste will be diverted from the landfill by recycling or salvaging materials.
